Estadio National de Costa Rica

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Apparently, Costa Rica is about to open a new national stadium. It was a “present” from the Chinese government for establishing the relationship with China in 2007 instead of supporting Taiwan as it used to do before.

Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose has been already completed and the inauguration will take part in late March for the whole week starting with a friendly game against China, followed a couple of days later with a game against Argentina and finishing with a concert of Shakira on April, 4, 2011. After that, the stadium, the capacity of which is a bit over 35 000, is going to be used mostly for football matches.

Nicaragua vs Costa Rica

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

An interesting situation occurred in relationship between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Apparently Nicaragua’s army invaded a small part of Costa Rica near the border between the countries and demanded that it is Nicaraguan territory. The Nicaraguan president is a friend of Mr. Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela. Together they are pursuing the idea of creating a second “Panama canal” on the territory of Nicaragua and this small part of Costa Rica is a very valuable piece for them.

Costa Rica has no army and obviously saving a lot of money because of that. Therefore, it makes it almost impossible to defend the territory. There were policemen sent to the invaded territory but there is not much they can do against a well-trained army. At the same time Nicaragua is destroying Costa Rican rain forests. There was a letter sent to United Nations but it may take years before this organization actually decides anything about this matter.

Columbia, on the other hand, is willing to send their own troops to Costa Rica and help them out as Columbian and Venezuelan presidents do not like each other… What a base for a nice Latin America soap opera :) !!!
